Perspectives on geologic carbon storage

چکیده
Geologic carbon storage (GCS) is a fundamental pillar of management that helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and addresses the negative effects climate change. Viable CO 2 sites share some same elements required for successful petroleum systems. For example, while reservoir, seal, trap are required, migration pathway timing not important storage, because rather than withdrawing fluid from trap, involves injection into geologic trap. Conceptually, this represents form reverse production. Numerous traps around world, as well naturally occurring -producing fields natural attest safe, long-term possible. Research over past two decades identified five methods Carbon Storage which have been validated through several demonstration pilot projects world: (1) in depleted oil fields, (2) use enhanced hydrocarbons recovery (3) saline formations/aquifers, (4) deep unmineable coal seams, (5) in-situ / ex-situ mineralization. The greatest volumetric potential GCS found aquifers present throughout world’s sedimentary basins.

Dynamic imaging provides an effective way to integrate previous time-lapse data with current data in order to estimate a current model. We present two methods useful for continuous dynamic reservoir and subsurface monitoring. The first method is a stochastic method for the inversion of geophysical data. It uses the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) that we demonstrate using time-lapse surface seism...

Efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change have led research and industry groups to explore ways of applying existing technologies and practices to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions. The storage of CO2 in underground geologic reservoirs is one such idea that employs techniques developed for oil and gas production and transmission. For example, CO2 has been injected into petroleum r...
